What is DigiD?

What is DigiD (pronounced as dee-gi-de)?

You will probably hear this word for quite a while after you land in the Netherlands and wondering what the hell it has to do with you.

DigiD is your digital ID, which comprises a username and password of your choice. With your DigiD, you can get access to hundreds of Dutch government portals, such as MijnOverheid.

Okay hold on, it’s not as complicated as it seems to pronounce it. We’ll get as detailed as possible for you *cracks knuckles*. Alright…

Mijn Overheid is a personal secure mailbox for digital correspondence from government organizations, health institutions, educational websites or your pension fund. You can also use the login code to book appointments on municipal websites. It can also be very convenient when you move to another city and need to change the address. It can be all changed in just one click. Also, the ID is again required for submitting your tax return. So, we can conclude that it is a very important login to have!

Now that you know this platform covers basically everything to do with your stay in the Netherlands, let’s dive into how you can apply to get a DigiD account.

To obtain your DigiD, you have to be registered with the municipality where you live and have a BSN number. Please note that your DigiD is strictly personal, so neither your employer nor other random companies can apply for a DigiD on your behalf. The application can be done via the DigiD website. You can also download DigiD app which makes the login process for these websites with a public function quicker and easier.

P Most importantly, please also be aware of scammers. Never give somebody over the phone or email such personal details like your BSN number or your DigiD login. Not to scare you, but it’s good to stay alert.

After your application, you will receive a letter with an activation code at the address you provided. You must use the code to activate your account within 20 days. Please write down your username and password that you use when you want to request the activation code. After receiving the activation code you need to log in with the login details you created. If you forget them, you have to re-apply again! FYI, it’s not fun to wait for the code 5 more working days to come in your mailbox.

And huzzah! You now hopefully know how to pronounce DigiD and also have one soon! At first, all these systems that are in place in the Netherlands might come across as mindboggling, but believe me, eventually you’ll find these processes making your life easier.
